China Diaspora on Telegram Ads 2026: 80 ZH Creatives Targeting Taiwan, HK, Singapore and Overseas Chinese
Telegram is blocked in mainland China — yet 80 Chinese-language creatives are indexed. Analysis of the China diaspora advertising segment: Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Southeast Asian Chinese communities. Crypto exchanges, fintech, signals and overseas investment products.
Overview#
Mainland China blocks Telegram via the Great Firewall. Yet our archive contains 80 Chinese-language (ZH) creatives — the 16th-largest language segment by creative count. This apparent contradiction has a clean explanation: the ZH creatives are not targeting mainland Chinese residents. They target the Chinese diaspora: Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the 40+ million overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia, North America, Europe and the Middle East.
This is one of the most commercially interesting advertising segments we track — a globally distributed, high-income, crypto-engaged community that is systematically underserved by Western ad platforms (which lack ZH-native Telegram community reach) but highly reachable through Telegram.
| Target market | Estimated ZH creative share |
|---|---|
| Taiwan | ~35% |
| Singapore + SEA Chinese | ~30% |
| Hong Kong | ~20% |
| Global diaspora (undifferentiated) | ~15% |
Why Telegram for Chinese diaspora#
Telegram is not accessible in mainland China without a VPN or proxy. But in every other ZH-speaking market, Telegram is freely accessible and actively used:
- Taiwan: Telegram is a primary messaging platform for tech/crypto communities. No domestic privacy concerns.
- Hong Kong: Post-2019 protests created strong Telegram adoption as a privacy-first communication tool. Continues to be a major platform for finance and political commentary.
- Singapore: Large English-Chinese bilingual population. Telegram used for professional networking, crypto trading communities and news channels.
- SEA diaspora (Malaysia, Indonesia Chinese-ethnic, Thailand): Telegram sits alongside LINE and WhatsApp as a multi-platform environment.
For advertisers, ZH Telegram channels aggregate a globally dispersed but culturally cohesive audience that's difficult to reach as efficiently on other platforms.
Creative breakdown by category#
| Category | ZH creatives | % |
|---|---|---|
| Crypto exchange (CEX) | ~38 | ~48% |
| Trading signals / copy-trading | ~18 | ~23% |
| DeFi / yield products | ~10 | ~13% |
| Overseas investment / fintech | ~8 | ~10% |
| Other (VPN, dating, news) | ~6 | ~8% |
Crypto exchanges: the dominant category#
ZH crypto advertising is dominated by exchanges with strong Greater China brand recognition:
Tier 1 (highest ZH creative volume):
- OKX — originally OKEx, maintains strong ZH brand identity. Multiple ZH creatives per month targeting TW/SG.
- Binance — ZH creatives focus on TWD/SGD on-ramp and traditional finance-adjacent messaging
- Bybit — aggressive ZH presence, particularly for derivatives and trading competitions
Tier 2 (moderate volume):
- Gate.io — strong in altcoin/smaller-cap ZH communities
- Bitget — growing ZH creative presence post-2023 rebrand
- MEXC — targeted at Chinese diaspora looking for wider token selection than Tier 1 CEXs
Copy patterns in ZH CEX creatives:
- TWD/SGD fiat on-ramp prominent: "新台幣入金 — 秒到賬" (TWD deposit — instant credit)
- Chinese New Year seasonal hook: 2026 ZH creative velocity spiked ~40% in late January
- Traditional financial metaphors: wealth accumulation and stability framing vs. English-language "DeFi yield" framing
- Simplified vs Traditional Chinese: Singapore/Malaysian diaspora creatives use simplified (简体); Taiwan and HK creatives use traditional (繁體)
The simplified/traditional split as a geo signal#
One of the most reliable geo inference signals for ZH creatives is character set:
| Character set | Target markets | Sample creative phrase |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional Chinese (繁體) | Taiwan, HK, Macau, some SEA overseas Chinese | "數位資產交易所 — 安全快速" |
| Simplified Chinese (简体) | Singapore, Malaysia, SEA diaspora, global mainland expats | "数字资产交易所 — 安全快速" |
| Mixed / Simplified primary | Undifferentiated diaspora, mainland expat targeting | Varies |
This split matters for advertisers: Taiwan and Singapore are distinct markets with different regulatory environments (FSC in Taiwan, MAS in Singapore), different payment rails (TWD wire vs SGD FPS/PayNow), and different risk tolerances.
Taiwan: the largest ZH sub-market#
Taiwan (~23M population, ~17M internet users) is the largest Telegram-accessible ZH market. Key characteristics:
Financial Services Commission (FSC) context: Taiwan has a crypto regulatory framework under the FSC since 2022, requiring VASPs to register. Creatives targeting TW-based audiences show notably more compliance-aware framing than those targeting undifferentiated diaspora:
- Risk disclosure language appears in ~60% of TW-targeted creatives (vs ~15% for undifferentiated diaspora)
- "FSC認可" (FSC-recognized) or similar regulatory badge claims appear in some creatives — worth verifying, as claims may be inaccurate
TWD on-ramp emphasis: 91% of TW-targeted crypto creatives mention TWD (New Taiwan Dollar) specifically as a deposit option. The most common rails: wire transfer via domestic banks (Cathay United, CTBC) and mobile payment (Taiwan Pay, Line Pay integrations).
TW-specific brands: Maicoin, BitoPro (local TW exchanges) do not appear in our Telegram archive — suggesting they rely on domestic channels rather than Telegram-native advertising.
Singapore and SEA: high-value diaspora segment#
Singapore's ZH community (~74% of 5.8M population is Chinese-ethnic) is the highest-income ZH Telegram market. MAS-regulated crypto companies can passport across ASEAN, making Singapore-based entities strategically important.
Regulatory signal in SG-targeted creatives:
- MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore) licence mentions appear in ~25% of SG-targeted ZH creatives
- "MAS牌照" (MAS licence) or "受MAS监管" (MAS-regulated) are positive trust signals in this market
PayNow as the distinguishing signal: PayNow (Singapore's real-time payment rail) appears in ~40% of SG-targeted ZH creatives. Its presence is a clean geo inference signal — PayNow doesn't exist outside Singapore.
SEA Chinese communities (Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand): Targeting is less precise — primarily simplified ZH creatives without strong local payment-rail signals. These likely represent opportunistic reach campaigns on large ZH-language Telegram news and community channels.
Hong Kong: the complex case#
Hong Kong presents a unique ZH advertising environment:
Post-2019 context: Significant HK population uses Telegram for privacy (end-to-end encrypted channels). This created a large, privacy-aware community that overlaps heavily with crypto and finance interest.
VASP licensing (SFC): Hong Kong's Securities and Futures Commission launched a VASP licensing regime in 2023. Exchanges operating in HK must be licensed. This creates compliance pressure similar to EU/MiCA:
- Licensed exchanges (HashKey, OSL) operate differently from unlicensed offshore players
- Several HK-targeted ZH creatives reference "SFC持牌" (SFC-licensed) as a trust signal
Capital outflow context: HK ZH creatives occasionally reference the ability to move assets "offshore" or into "global currencies" — a nod to concerns about capital controls and HK dollar peg stability.
Overseas investment and fintech segment#
~8 ZH creatives target overseas investment products for diaspora — a segment with no equivalent in any other language in our archive:
- Cross-border remittance: "從台灣匯錢到新加坡 — 手續費最低" (Send money from Taiwan to Singapore — lowest fees)
- Multi-currency accounts: Wise, Revolut alternatives targeted at diaspora managing TWD/SGD/HKD/USD simultaneously
- Overseas property investment: 2 creatives targeting Chinese diaspora with Singapore or Dubai property investment products
- Foreign exchange management: TWD/SGD/HKD hedging products from non-bank forex operators
This segment reflects diaspora-specific financial complexity — people managing assets across multiple jurisdictions.
What's absent: the mainland absence#
The "China blocking Telegram" fact means:
- No WeChat Pay integration: WeChat Pay/Alipay don't appear in ZH Telegram creatives — these are mainland-China rails and diaspora users typically have alternative access
- No mainland-focused products: No creatives targeting mainland China topics (domestic CNY products, A-shares, RMB investment)
- No mainland Chinese brands: Domestic ZH brands (Tencent, Alibaba products) do not appear in ZH Telegram advertising
- MTProto proxy advertising: We see no Chinese-language MTProto proxy ads (unlike the Iranian market). China-based users accessing Telegram via VPN/proxy don't appear to be a Telegram advertising target
Creative format patterns#
In 80 ZH creatives:
- Text + banner: 51% — higher than average across all geos, reflecting the visual sophistication of ZH consumer marketing
- Text-only: 32%
- Short video: 12%
- Channel-pic format: 5%
ZH creatives show notably higher production quality than average — polished typography, consistent brand colours, Chinese-language visual design conventions. This suggests professional marketing teams rather than guerrilla affiliate operators.
Data methodology#
ZH language classification uses Unicode CJK block detection plus Simplified/Traditional classifier. Geo inference relies on: character set (Traditional → TW/HK; Simplified → SG/SEA), payment rail mentions (TWD/TWire → TW; PayNow/SGD → SG), and CTA URL TLDs (.tw, .sg, .hk). Mainland China-targeted content is explicitly excluded — creatives targeting mainland residents would be inaccessible to the intended audience without VPN and are not in our observation scope.
